September 2021 -
The Cazenovia Art Trail had long been a wish which I placed high on a shelf, in my mind. It is an event here in Cazenovia, New York which tours local artists' studios. Visitors can meet the artists, ask questions, and learn about the various art forms. Visitors can also buy art !
ARTIST STATEMENT
The past few years I have been an, abstract, digital photographer. My passion was discovered later on in life and I have been on a journey of discovering the camera. Keeping my images as they were captured in the camera is important to me. When editing, which I consider part of my creative process, I might intensify certain colors slightly for more dramatic effects or darken shadows for a mysterious feel. I have recently been playing around with some filters and a small amount of AI. Again, I prefer my images to have a natural quality.
I grew up outside of Ithaca, NY on a 22-acre farmland and woods. Along with the forest paths, was a stream and pond where I spent many hours. Trees, pastures, and murky pond water were my playground. I have discovered that my childhood adventures have definitely shaped my work and I am very comfortable standing in marshy environments and exploring the unknown where others might be wary. Searching for secreted lights, colors, sounds throughout a complete ecosystem among the sludges. My work has also been shaped from years of ballet and playing the violin as a young adult. I see the long lines and movement in our environment which play with through reflections of scraggly branches of trees from above.
ARTISTIC PROCESS
I consider my photography to be artistic and strive to capture images which are unique. The first steps in photographing are the technical ones. I continually adjust exposure, amount of flash, depth of field, and composition in order to create a certain feeling or story. Often, I take the image more than once, with different settings which gives me more options to work with when it comes to editing. I also choose a specific lens for certain subjects. Some - such as a macro lens - is for a small object from a short distance away; which creates a lovely blurred background. Another lens, captures more detailed surroundings from a longer distance away – such as landscapes.
EDITING PROCESS
Another aspect of my art, as a photographer. This is where I feel more creative. Although, it is important to me to maintain natural looking images. For the past 2 years; I have been experimenting with Photoshop and Lightroom software.
